3. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

5. The game begins with white making the first move. Players take turns moving their pieces.
6. If a player's king is attacked by an opponent's piece, the king is in check. The player must move their king out of check, block the attack, or capture the attacking piece.
